Another case of “What have you done for me lately?” had investors sending Pike Electric Corp.’s share price down in early trading Wednesday even though it reported record revenue for its fiscal year 2013.The Mount Airy company’s fourth quarter ended June 30. The report was issued after the stock market closed Tuesday.Pike reported $918.7 million in revenue for the full year, up 34 percent from a year ago, as it benefited from recent business acquisitions and Hurricane Sandy power-restoration work. The company said it had $167.3 million in revenue from storm power-restoration work – the second most in company history.
That led to net income of $36.2 million for the year, up from $10.9 million in fiscal 2012.
“By virtually every measure, fiscal 2013 was the best year in our company's 69-year history,” Eric Pike, the company’s chairman and chief executive, said in a statement.
However, for the fourth quarter, the company’s net income was down 55 percent to $616,000. Earnings were 2 cents a share compared with 4 cents a year ago.
The average forecast was 13 cents by analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research. The company said it took 10 cents’ worth of charges related to a secondary equity offering and share-repurchase program conducted during May. Analysts typically don’t include one-time gains and charges in their earnings forecasts.
The share price was down 4.4 percent, or by 50 cents, to $10.91 at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Pike said in May it would spend $40 million on repurchasing 3.66 million shares. The shares were offered by an entity affiliated with Lindsay Goldberg LLC.
Pike said it expects to pay for the share repurchase by borrowing from its revolving credit facility and available cash. The company said it spent $2.9 million on the secondary offering and other related costs during the fourth quarter.
A company typically buys back its share from the marketplace to reduce the number of outstanding shares. Because there are fewer outstanding shares, those remaining in the marketplace can become more valuable. Companies also buy back shares when they believe the shares are undervalued.
“We returned $75 million to shareholders (during fiscal 2013) through the combination of a special dividend in December and the share repurchase program we completed in May,” Eric Pike said.
Fourth-quarter revenue was up 12.1 percent to $200.2 million, while expenses also were up 11.2 percent to $174.1 million.
Pike said the company’s diversification strategy “continues to serve us well.” He cited as example record revenue of more than $100 million from its transmission construction business. Construction revenue was at $164.4 million, up 4 percent.
“We are strongly positioned to benefit from the improving trends in our industry, including the ongoing recovery in distribution construction related to growth in the U.S. housing industry,” Pike said.
